We are looking for you at Tara's Meadow, Beaver Island (Michigan's own Emerald Isle) for an outdoor session housewarming party Saturday June 25th. I'm a part time professor of Celtic courses at North Central Michigan College. We have a small community of friends from off and on the island to celebrate with us, calling ourselves the Wheelbarrel Coyotes and we do howl, so Wild Dismay must be our kin. Can you give us a shout? Seamus (231) 347-7957. Please leave a call back number for me. Slan go foill, Seamus

An absolutely great site. As a native Ohioan, I am very proud. You've got great versions of the tunes too. My link was trying to track down Robin Williamson, whose 1975 tunebook got me into all this. I've been going to slow seisuns and old time jams around here for about 18 months now playing my fiddle (after about 30 years off) and have to say it's changing my life (for the good). Keep up the good work.

I play the exact same stuff on piano and I thought the playing was sweet. I already knew a lot of the tunes here but I' never heard them played the way i did here, especially Star of the County Down. I don't know if it would be possible, but if you could, let e know if you get any really good additions, I' probably recognize most of them. Keep the music flowing, there's nothing like irish.

I've been searching the Internet trying to find a tune I learned at Primary school and have since all but forgotten. This tune is very important as it was a favourite of my grandmother who died a while back and is still a favourite of my mother. If anyone knows this tune in letter form, please send it to me, it's called the Lonesome Boatman.
Thank you

I've been looking for many of these since I lost my Robin Williamson (?) penny whistle book - which is now out of print.
You have saved me hours of heartache and hard work by generously publishing both the MIDI and the GIF files.
Got any more? Looking fot the Shepherds Hey and some more I can't think of right now.

Absolutely a fine site. Wonderful arranging of some very nice traditional tunes. I have saved some of the midis to my hard drive and grab my whistle and play along often. Easy to read notation. It has given me the nerve to try my hand with it on the keyboard. Thanks. But I hope you realise your site has honed my skills enough that I'm soon going to be brave enough to play outside the secrecy of my home....you have helped to turn another whistle player loose on the world.

Hello,
just as I was watching the changes to the Skye boat song, I saw a B7 in the second beat, where the melody is in fact a D. This makes this hord a b7/#9 which is rather jazzy...I am a jazz and a folk musician, so I know a little bit about this two interesting worlds, and I sometimes combine them.
But with to Skye boat song...
I have some nice changes to this song, if you are interested, please send me an e-mail.

Next step is to get this in notation so this non-music reader can play on his cheapo Concertina and get Chicago back into folk music and sea shanties ... By the way, thank Mudcat.org for the link.

Hi there. Loads of good stuff. One point though- don't forget England! Many of your tunes can be traced to English origins, in particular, a hornpipe is a particularly English form. It's a mistake to think that traditional music is the reserve of the 'celtic' nations ! (and this from an Englishman of Irish roots)

I play guitar with a friend on small pipes. It's very difficult to figure out guitar parts from pipe music. Pipers have no sense of key, and their rythmn is ruined by playing in pipe bands.

Thanks for sharing what must have taken years to collect! I am an elementary music teacher in north Georgia.(ex-high school band director)and have recently become more interested and involved with Celtic music. I think it's in me blood......My mothers parents were irish immigrants, Brogan and Bergin. I have a good start on an antique banjo collection also. These tunes are particularly fun to play on tenor banjo.
Thanks agaim,

Your site is wonderful. I have learned a number of
waltzes using the music and the recordings. It has really
helped me, because I tend to learn by ear (my music reading
is quite elementary) but I like having the notes as once
I've learned the tune. I have taught my class (now in seventh
grade)a number of waltzes and we even
had our fisrt gig on May Day of this year. Thanks for
the great site. It has been an inspiration!

singing group called Tarnished Sterling. We were looking for a number of midi files to import into
another software program, Noteworthy Composer, to get some sheet music. We found all four
peices that we were looking for right here. It was great to find so much great music here, with both midi and abc files, plus the sheet music was a fabulous bonus! We will be back and will also mention it to our bandmates and friends. Simply fantastic

I was delighted. I am a fiddler in West Virginia and have an ecclectic folk group that plays early, clasical, renaissance, celtic, and jazz. We are the Morning Star Consort and perform around the Baltimore /Washington area. We have a strange assortment of instruments, lute, viola da gamba, flute, bagpipes, celtic harp, guitar, bass and fiddle. I am new to the internet but have been using abc for 3 years, writing original music, and putting music down I have learned from ear. I spent the whole evening on your site, noticing the different chords and trying out the sets you suggested. It was fun, I will be sure to share this site with other's.
Keep up the good work, and since I have family around Stow, Ohio..I might stop in for a jam session on my way to Michigan, and I am sure to know a few of your tunes. We have a jam session on Thursday nights in Shepherdstown,West Virginia. It has been going on for 15 years, we do mostly cletic and oldtime. So if you are ever this way...stop in and jam.

I play the whistle, myself, with a moderate degree of success, and fell in

Hello,
I found you from:
http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/
I was actually looking on Ceolas to see if I could find a link through to an abc of Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring and I got distracted.
Nice site, would love to have heard some sound files of the stuff you do. I also play trad Brit and Irish music but I suspect the band I play in are a little bit "rougher" (Dubliners meet the Sex Pistols (with trad instruments drum and bass)) than your style, so I just wanted to have a listen. May be there are some in here somewhere and I have completely missed them. Doh!
Cheers
Adrian

You"re Web Site is great. I"m new to computing, but I"ve been finding a lot of neat and useful information. I"m in an English & Celtic duo in New Jersey and some of the songs we do are in Welsh language. I play guitar, mandolin, cuatro, Banjo-guitar and electric bass. I"m trying to learn more tunes and your Site is helping me out a lot.

Writing a musc book for kids and was looking for a way to intro them to sea shanties, jigs & reels & all. How is a slip reel different from a regular reel? Glad I found your site.

I am still enjoying the fine craftsmanship of your tunes and have spent quite a bit of time playing them to get a feel for the various tunes.
I do have a question about an Irish tune which is on one of the Celtic CDs: "Suantrai"
Do you know the piece or where I might find it? Any help will be appreciated.

Your site looks very fine, and seems to operate smoothly (unfortunately, NOT a given on the web, where style often triumphs over substance). I"m not a music reader, but I"ll show some of these items to my musiliterate friends, and check out some of the MIDI files for later. (when I get around to firing up the generator so that I can run my MIDI outfit at home.)
I"l tell my brother Tom in North Carolina, a fan and practitioner of traditional music (who does read to some extent).
Marilee says it"s a shame we just now got around to viewing this site; so little time, so much to surf!

My Darlings
At last I have found the "skye boat song" for which I have been looking for ages upon ages! I was a little bit confused about printing out the tune, but I finally figured it out. I had even written to a number of folk whom I thought could help me. You darlings did it! I am so pleased with your listings that I took the liberty to print several other tunes as well. I have been making settings of Celtic Songs for the organ (my native instrument!) a la chorale preludes, partitas, and the like. I have purchased a number of Traditional Tunes books and have already arranged about a half-dozen. What started out as a Christmas series is now much wider. I will be visiting you often as long as I am welcome in your Homepage. Yesterday, I was able tofinally track down a copy of "Carmina Gadelica" on Interlibrary Loan. My wife and I are lovers of Celtic Tunes. She has just purchased a hammered dulcimer and is making really fast progress and now we can play duets.
May the good God bless you and all who are in your Homepage. jack
